Deck Construction
Outdoor Space That Holds a Crowd.

Custom decks across southeastern North Carolina, framed like structures because that is what they are. Wood or composite, ground-level or elevated.

A deck is a structure hanging off your house with your family standing on it. Most deck failures in this state trace to the same two details: a ledger board fastened without proper bolts and flashing, and posts sitting in dirt instead of on footings. Both are invisible at the housewarming and catastrophic ten years in.

We build decks as the structural projects they are: engineered footings below grade, flashed and through-bolted ledgers, joists sized for real loads, and railings that meet code because code is what keeps people off the ground.

Decks We Build

  • Pressure-treated wood decks. The workhorse of southeastern NC backyards. Ground-contact-rated framing, correct fastener ratings for treated lumber, and board spacing that handles our humidity swings.
  • Composite and PVC decks. Low-maintenance surfaces on treated frames, with the tighter joist spacing composite actually requires. We tell you honestly where composite is worth it and where wood still wins.
  • Elevated and second-story decks. Engineered posts and beams, lateral bracing, and stairs built to code geometry. Height multiplies loads and consequences, so it multiplies our attention.
  • Covered decks and porch conversions. Roofed outdoor rooms tied correctly into the existing structure, built with our own framing crew and flashed at the house connection like the roof depends on it, because it does.
  • Deck rebuilds and replacements. Tearing off failing decks and rebuilding on corrected structure. If your current deck bounces, leans, or wobbles at the rail, that is the structure talking.
  • Railings, stairs, and lighting. Code-height railings with balusters that pass the four-inch rule, comfortable stair rise and run, and low-voltage lighting that makes the deck usable after dark.

The Ledger Is Everything

When you read about a deck collapse, it is almost always the ledger: the board that ties the deck to the house, fastened with nails instead of structural bolts, or left unflashed so water rotted the house rim behind it. Our ledgers are through-bolted or structurally screwed to the manufacturer schedule and flashed so water never sits in the connection.

Footings matter just as much in our sandy coastal-plain soil. We dig to stable bearing, pour real footings, and keep post bases out of ground contact so the structure is not quietly composting from the bottom up.

Built for Carolina Backyards

We build decks in Lumberton, Hope Mills, Raeford, and across the fifty-mile radius. Screened corners for mosquito season, ceiling fans on covered sections, and stain and hardware choices that survive the sun and humidity out here.

Three Decks From Recent Seasons

The replacement the old deck earned.

Fifteen years old, nailed ledger, posts buried in dirt. Torn off and rebuilt with through-bolts, flashing, and real footings. Same footprint, different structure entirely.

The covered outdoor room.

A roofed deck with a fan, lighting, and a screened section, tied into the house roofline so it reads as original construction rather than an obvious add-on.

The second-story escape.

A bedroom-level deck with engineered posts and a stair run that finally connects the upstairs to the yard. Height done right, from footings to rail height.

Deck Construction Questions, Answered

Do I need a permit to build a deck?

In most local jurisdictions, yes, attached and elevated decks require a building permit and inspections. That is a good thing: the inspection checks the footings and ledger that you will never see again. We pull the permit and schedule the inspections as part of the job.

Wood or composite: which should I choose?

Pressure-treated wood costs less up front and takes periodic sealing. Composite costs more and mostly just needs washing. In full sun, composite runs hotter underfoot. We lay out real numbers for both over a fifteen-year horizon at the consultation.

How long does a deck build take?

A straightforward ground-level deck runs one to two weeks including footings and inspections. Elevated or covered decks run two to four. Weather moves things a little, and we plan for it.

Can you replace just the deck boards on my existing frame?

Only if the frame deserves it. We inspect the ledger, joists, and posts first. Re-skinning a rotten frame is throwing money onto a failing structure, and we will show you photos of exactly what we find before recommending either path. Call (910) 785-9253 to set up a look.

How big a deck can I build?

Setbacks and lot coverage rules set the limits, and they vary by jurisdiction. We check your parcel’s rules during design so the deck you fall in love with is one you can legally build.

Can you build a screened porch instead of an open deck?

Yes, and in mosquito country it is often the better spend. A screened room on a proper deck frame with a real roof tie-in gets used three seasons instead of two, and we build the framing so it can be glassed in later if you ever want to go further.

What maintenance will my new deck actually need?

Pressure-treated wood wants a wash and a penetrating sealer every two to three years. Composite wants soap and water. Either way, the structure underneath needs nothing but the occasional glance if it was built right, which is the point of building it right.

Can you build around my existing trees?

Yes, and done right it is the best feature of the deck. Framing gets gapped for trunk growth, footings get placed to respect the root zone, and the tree keeps its health while the deck keeps its shade. We have built around oaks that are now the whole reason people sit out there.

Decks That Age Like Structures

Every deck in this climate is in a slow fight with sun, rain, and humidity. The winners are decided at build time: end cuts sealed, hardware rated for treated lumber, boards gapped for drainage, and airflow under the frame so the structure dries between storms. None of it shows in the photos and all of it shows in year twelve.

We also design for how you will actually use it. Grill zones that keep smoke off the seating, stair placement that follows the real path to the yard, and framing pre-blocked for the pergola or screen room you are already thinking about.
